The San Fernando Valley Young Democrats will be honoring four outstanding individuals and organizations that truly represent the heart of democratic values. This year’s honorees are incredible examples of the values we share and the goals we have for the future. The 2019 RFK honorees are:

California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, RFK Legacy Award in recognition of his outstanding efforts to fight for and protect consumers, working families, and the environment, demonstrated by his legislative portfolio that includes expanding health care coverage, standing up for immigrant rights, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

AFSCME District Council 36, RFK Leadership Award for their unrelenting work standing up for state, county, and municipal employees in an era when unions and workers’ rights are under pernicious attack by reactionary conservative forces.

Sandra Fluke, Public Interest Attorney, RFK Mentorship Award for her inspirational body of work as a progressive advocate and women’s rights champion, throughout which she has consistently supported and mentored young activists.

Michael Kapp, Chair of the DNC Youth Council, Carroll Inspiration Award  for his work making the Democratic Party more accountable, effective, and inclusive as a grassroots activist and for representing Young Democrats nationally  the youngest member of the DNC from California.

In 2018, SFVYD pushed our political operations to new heights. SFVYD took up a core, leading role in the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley’s Campaign HQ, widely regarded as one of the most effective voter outreach offices in California. We contributed directly and mobilized hundreds of volunteers for candidates in targeted, close elections for Congress, state legislature, and statewide offices.

SFVYD signed on as unabashed supporters of the new wave of progressive grassroots politics by supporting movements such as the Green New Deal, Abolish ICE, demanding police accountability, protecting Native American land, supporting public school teachers, and #MeToo. These are the foundational values that we use to evaluate candidates, advocate for legislation, and educate our membership.

Above all else, SFVYD prides itself on furnishing a safe, inclusive space for young activists to learn about political issues, have a voice on the political process, and develop as leaders.
